Cultural Internship

Many students describe the Cultural Internship as one of the highlights of Japan Study. Students on the Full Year or Fall Semester + Cultural Internship options engage in an internship-like experience for approximately four weeks during winter break (February/March). The cultural internship allows students to partake in a cultural or volunteer experience with local institutions in a rural or urban locations throughout Japan. Recent internships have included assisting educators in a rural community in Shimane Prefecture, experiencing the world of Kimono creation through traditional dyeing and painting, working at a ski resort in Nagano Prefecture, apprenticing at a pottery studio in Tochigi Prefecture, and experiencing life in a Buddhist temple in Okayama Prefecture.

Transportation (to and from internship/volunteer site), accommodations, and meals are included in the program fee. Students apply for their Cultural Internship through the Japan Study Waseda office during Fall Semester. Not all Cultural Internship placements are available each year. Please see the links below for examples of and essays about both current and past internships, and contact the Japan Study Office to ascertain which are currently being offered.  The Cultural Internship is required for all Academic Year and Fall + Cultural Internship students.

Following are examples of current and past internship opportunities.  Internship locations are subject to change depending on the host site's needs.
